Tailoring Application of Reconfigurable Intelligent Meta-Surfaces in future Beyond 5G Networks

capture2

The project considered channel modelling issues related to the RIS application, established a new corresponding framework “beyond Shannon” to characterize RIS aided networks, investigated application of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning enabling control of such complex systems as well as proper positioning of the RIS elements across network coverage areas, and much more.

Artificial Intelligence Aided D-band Network for 5G Long Term Evolution

The ARIADNE project plans to bring together a novel high frequency advanced radio architecture and an Artificial Intelligence (AI) network processing and management approach into a new type of intelligent communications system Beyond 5G. The new intelligent system approach is necessary because the scale and complexity of the new radio attributes in the new frequency ranges cannot be optimally operated using traditional network management approaches.

Main results achieved so far

Already during first months on its life time, the ARIADNE project consortium defined a reference system model as basis for future investigations. The ARIADNE system concept (see above) includes three general use cases and corresponding scenarios, allowing detailed system modelling and design as well as further planned research activities.

Until now, the ARIADNE project specified its system model as basis for future investigations which will be carried out within the project scope. An analysis of the D-band directional link, including consideration of suitable channel modelling approaches, possible ways forward in performance evaluation, and preliminary studies on appropriate application of machine learning techniques in this context have been concluded. Furthermore, bases for application of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces and reconfigurable antennas for D-Band have been laid down.
